India Suspends Health Supplement Maker's License Over Critical Hygiene Failures

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the manufacturing license of Rehaan Healthcare, a producer of health supplements and nutraceuticals, due to severe hygiene lapses and non-compliance. The regulator's decision followed inspections that uncovered critical issues at the company's facility in Mohali.

According to FSSAI's statement, food safety officers found the manufacturing premises to be "extremely unhygienic and unorganised." Specific findings included the presence of spider webs, mould growth, flies, insects, and exposed food waste within the production area. Sediments of filth and sludge were observed under manufacturing tanks, and disorganized storage of raw materials, coupled with poor housekeeping, created a significant risk of cross-contamination.

As the unit manufactures health supplements and nutraceuticals, a high-risk category of food consumed by children and other vulnerable groups, the unhygienic conditions and failure of food safety controls pose a serious and imminent threat to public health.

Further deficiencies were noted in the unit's infrastructure and facilities. These included inadequate storage, insufficient workspace, poor ventilation and lighting, damaged structures, and evidence of pest infestation. The absence of a valid drinking water test report also raised concerns.

The FSSAI License has been suspended with immediate effect.

FSSAI emphasized the serious threat to public health, particularly as the unit manufactures products for children and vulnerable groups. The regulator awarded the unit a compliance score of just 12%, indicating a "very serious failure." Rehaan Healthcare has been ordered to cease all production until the identified deficiencies are rectified and compliance is verified. The company faces potential legal action if it violates the suspension order.

The FBO (food business operator) has been directed to immediately cease all food business activities… any violation of this order shall invite appropriate legal action under the FSSA Act, 2006.
