Indonesia Champions Green Customs and Developing Nations' Interests at Global WCO Meeting

Indonesia has reinforced its role in global customs policy discussions by actively participating in the 94th Policy Commission and the 147th/148th Council Sessions of the World Customs Organization (WCO). Held at the WCO headquarters in Brussels from June 22-27, 2026, these meetings are crucial for setting the direction of international customs practices.

As a representative of the Asia-Pacific region on the WCO Policy Commission, Indonesia, through its Directorate General of Customs and Excise, voiced the aspirations of developing nations. The Policy Commission serves as a steering group, deliberating on policy issues before they are presented to the main Council. Indonesia's presence on this commission reflects recognition of its contributions to fostering balanced and inclusive global customs policies.

Key topics addressed during the sessions included the WCO's strategic plan, the modernization and digitalization of customs operations, strengthening supply chain integrity, and internal governance reforms. A significant focus for Indonesia was the "green customs" agenda, where the nation actively contributed to a Joint Statement on Green Customs, underscoring its commitment to sustainable and secure trade. The outcomes of these meetings will serve as a reference for enhancing Indonesia's national customs services, including digital transformation and tariff classification improvements.
