Indonesia Concludes Ferry Fire SAR; KNKT Investigates Cause

Indonesia's search and rescue operation for the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II ferry fire has officially ended, with the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) now leading the investigation into the incident. The fire, which occurred in the waters north of Sumenep, Madura, claimed the lives of five people. Deputy Minister of Transportation, Suntana, confirmed that the KNKT has begun its probe to determine the exact cause of the blaze that engulfed the vessel en route from Surabaya to Makassar. "We need time for that examination process with KNKT," Suntana stated, emphasizing that the investigation will take time. The Ministry of Transportation is collaborating with the East Java Regional Police to examine potential criminal aspects. Suntana assured that the findings would be reported to the public once the KNKT completes its investigation. If the police investigation uncovers any criminal offenses, the case will be processed according to applicable law. The ministry also plans to improve and refine maritime safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies. "Sanctions will be given according to the rules," Suntana added, referencing past actions taken after previous maritime accidents, which included administrative sanctions and license revocations.
