Indonesia Contracts 12 Leonardo M-346 Fighter Jets for Air Force

Indonesia's Ministry of Defense has finalized a contract for the acquisition of 12 M-346 F "Block 20" aircraft from Italian manufacturer Leonardo. The signing ceremony was witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

This agreement builds upon a Letter of Intent initially announced in February 2026. The comprehensive contract includes provisions for localized support, maintenance, repair capabilities, and extensive training programs aimed at developing Indonesian human resources. The first deliveries of the advanced fighter jets are anticipated to commence in 2030.

The M-346 F Block 20 aircraft are designed as light, multirole fighter jets, intended to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU). This acquisition will make Indonesia the 23rd nation to operate the M-346, and the contract introduces the new "Block 20" standard to Asia, following its implementation in Europe and North America.

Leonardo views this contract as a significant endorsement of its technological prowess and its commitment to Indonesia's long-term defense and aerospace development. CEO and General Manager Lorenzo Mariani stated that the introduction of the M-346 F in Indonesia demonstrates "clear evidence not only of the inherent quality of the aircraft system but also of the sustained and growing trust of the country in our capabilities across various fields."
