Indonesia hikes fee for renouncing citizenship to 5 million rupiah

Indonesia has significantly raised the cost for citizens wishing to voluntarily renounce their Indonesian citizenship. Effective August 2026, the fee will jump from 1 million to 5 million rupiah, as stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) No. 30 of 2026. This new regulation, signed by President Prabowo Subianto on July 2, 2026, replaces the previous fee structure established in PP No. 45 of 2024.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights explained the adjustment is partly due to a restructuring of the ministry under President Subianto's administration. "First, because of the change in ministry nomenclature, yes, of course, the adjustment," said Dhahana Putra, Director General of Laws and Regulations. He confirmed the regulation's issuance.

Furthermore, the ministry cited ongoing digital transformation efforts as a reason for the revised tariffs. "Indeed, there are several tariff adjustments in accordance with the types of services provided in line with the digital transformation we are undertaking," stated Widodo, Director General of Administration for General Law. He emphasized that the 5 million rupiah fee covers the service provided, which involves verification by multiple ministries and agencies to ensure all obligations are met before a person is officially recognized as a foreign citizen.

Beyond the renunciation fee, PP No. 30 of 2026 also adjusts other citizenship-related services. Applying for a decree on the loss of Indonesian citizenship now costs 3.5 million rupiah. Obtaining Indonesian citizenship or a decree confirming Indonesian citizenship costs 1 million rupiah, while a certificate of citizenship status is 500,000 rupiah per application.
