Indonesia hopes Aceh governance law revision concludes this year

Indonesia's Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, expressed optimism that the revision of Law Number 11 of 2006 concerning Aceh Governance will be finalized this year. This push follows direct instructions from President Prabowo Subianto to coordinate with the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on the matter.

Agtas has already engaged in consultations with the Governor of Aceh, Muzakir Manaf, the Vice Governor, Fadhlullah, and members of the Aceh People's Representative Council (DPRA). The core of the revision revolves around the continuation of Aceh's Special Autonomy Fund. Under the current law, this fund, designed to support the region's development, is slated to end in 2027 after a 20-year period.

The legislative body, the House of Representatives' Legislation Body (Baleg DPR RI), has previously agreed to extend the Special Autonomy Fund. The ongoing discussions also encompass other specific arrangements and authorities unique to Aceh's governance. Minister Agtas took the opportunity to urge the people of Aceh to maintain unity and uphold the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

This legislative effort occurs against a backdrop of recent events, including a disturbance during Aceh's 21st Peace Day commemoration where a pro-independence flag was displayed. Vice Governor Fadhlullah, speaking on August 15, 2026, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and working together for Aceh's prosperity.
