Indonesia Intensifies Weather Modification to Fight Kalimantan Fires

Indonesia is stepping up efforts to combat forest and land fires in Central Kalimantan through intensified weather modification operations. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), in collaboration with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), is actively working to induce rainfall in the affected regions.

As part of this initiative, authorities have deployed a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX aircraft to seed clouds with approximately one ton of sodium chloride (NaCl). This process aims to enhance the potential for rain, thereby aiding in the suppression of the fires. The aircraft targets cloud formations identified by BMKG analysis as having the potential to produce precipitation.

In addition to weather modification, the BNPB has bolstered its aerial firefighting capabilities. A new Sikorsky S-61N water-bombing helicopter, sourced from Canada, has been added to the fleet. This brings the total number of aerial firefighting units operating in Central Kalimantan to four, increasing the capacity for rapid response and water deployment.

The combined efforts of weather modification and enhanced water-bombing capacity are expected to significantly reduce the extent of the fires, mitigate the impact of haze, and protect the local population and the vital forest ecosystem of Central Kalimantan. The operation is crucial in managing the recurring challenge of land and forest fires in the region.
