Indonesia Military Ammunition Depot Explodes, Killing One Soldier

An ammunition warehouse in Indonesia's East Java province exploded on Thursday morning, July 16, 2026, killing one soldier and injuring six others. The blast occurred at Warehouse II of the Indonesian Military Armed Forces (TNI AD) Ammunition in Madiun Regency.

In this incident, 1 soldier was declared dead, 4 seriously injured, and 2 others lightly injured.

Soldiers were conducting inspection and maintenance procedures for ammunition materials when the explosion happened around 9:00 AM Western Indonesian Time. The loud bang was heard in nearby residential areas. Brigadier General Donny Pramono, head of the TNI AD Information Department, confirmed the casualties: one soldier died, four sustained serious injuries, and two had minor injuries. All victims were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

The cause of the explosion remains undetermined. Pramono stated that the military's investigation team is working in the field and urged the public to avoid speculation. The area around the ammunition warehouse has been secured, with only the investigation team permitted entry.

This Madiun explosion is not an isolated event; at least three other TNI ammunition explosions have occurred between 2024 and 2025, causing casualties and damage.
