Indonesia Offers Condolences After Norway’s King Harald V Dies

Indonesia has formally mourned the death of Norway’s King Harald V, with Foreign Minister Sugiono signing a condolence book at the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta.

Sugiono wrote that, on behalf of Indonesia’s government and people, he offered his “heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the Government, and the People of Norway.” He said Harald would be remembered for his leadership, warmth, dedication and humility during his service as Norway’s head of state.

“His Late Majesty King Harald V will be remembered for his leadership, warmth, dedication, and humility. May His Late Majesty rest in peace,” Sugiono added in a message shared on social media platform X.

On behalf of the Government and People of Indonesia, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the Government, and the People of Norway.

The minister’s visit was presented as a mark of Indonesia’s respect for the late king and as a reflection of the close friendship between Indonesia and Norway. Deputy Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Christian Groseth welcomed Sugiono at the embassy.

Harald died on August 28 at the age of 89 after receiving medical treatment at Oslo’s National Hospital from August 17. The royal family said he had been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, while Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that his condition worsened after a bacterial infection entered his bloodstream.

Following his death, Crown Prince Haakon became Norway’s head of state as King Haakon VIII under the country’s Constitution. He swore allegiance to the Constitution during a ceremony in the Norwegian Parliament on September 1.
