Indonesia Rehabilitates 10,000 Schools to Improve Rural Education

Indonesia is undertaking a significant national effort to enhance rural education by rehabilitating around 10,000 schools this year. This initiative is part of a larger target to address the needs of 20,000 educational facilities across the archipelago, aiming to bridge infrastructure gaps, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas.

The total requirement exceeds 20,000 schools. Following the President's direction, we have commenced work on roughly 10,000 schools this year.

Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Minister Yandri Susanto stated that the program directly stems from President Prabowo Subianto's mandate to tackle infrastructure disparities. He highlighted examples of substandard facilities in isolated areas, such as Kuri Caddi Hamlet in Maros District, South Sulawesi, where a religious school operates near a growing fishermen's cooperative, illustrating the urgent need for synchronized upgrades.

The renovation program involves close coordination with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to ensure thorough coverage in remote and outermost regions. Minister Susanto emphasized an inter-agency operational model, describing the effort as a "super team" rather than "supermen," to tackle complex rural development challenges. This collaboration extends to agricultural development and infrastructure projects in frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged (3T) regions, where the ministry partners with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) for projects like clean water systems and access bridges.
