Indonesia’s 99 Asmaul Husna Mosques aim to restore mosques as centers of community development

The 99 Asmaul Husna Mosques program has entered its second construction phase, with organizers holding groundbreakings at seven sites across West Java.

Masjid Nusantara and the Cinta Qur’an Foundation launched the program in early 2026 and formally introduced it on July 12 during the Amazing Muharram 2026 event in Jakarta. The first phase began in Aceh, where two mosques were inaugurated in July.

Ivan Sopian, a director of the Cinta Qur’an Foundation, said the initiative aims to restore the mosque’s role as a center for building Muslim civilization. He linked that goal to the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina, saying a mosque was among the first structures built there.

The second phase’s four-day groundbreaking series covers seven mosques and prayer halls, each carrying a name drawn from the Asmaul Husna, the traditional names and attributes of Allah. The opening events took place on Aug. 25 in Bandung Regency.

The first three locations were Masjid Miftahul Huda in Kolelega village, Banjaran district, named Al-Wahhab; Masjid Al-Muttaqin in Padamdidalem village, Pangalengan district, named Al-Baqi; and Masjid Al-Hidayah in Lamajang village, also in Pangalengan, named An-Nur.

It was still during the Mawlid of the Prophet that we remembered how, when the Messenger migrated from Mecca to Medina, one of the first things he built was a mosque. From that mosque, the building of civilization emerged.
