Indonesia's Independence Day ceremony registration sees massive public turnout

An overwhelming public response has greeted the opening of registration for Indonesia's 81st Independence Day ceremony, with 128,331 individuals vying for invitations to the event at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on August 17, 2026.

The scramble for invitations, dubbed a "ticket war," saw applicants from all 36 Indonesian provinces and 14 other countries. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi described the public enthusiasm as "extraordinary," expressing appreciation for the high level of interest which he believes signifies the public's eagerness to witness the national celebration in person.

Recognizing the immense demand, Prasetyo apologized to those who could not secure an invitation during the initial phase. He assured the public that the registration process would be reopened on August 6, 2026, to accommodate more attendees. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to preside over the ceremony as the inspector, and has extended invitations to prominent national figures, including former presidents and vice presidents.

Beyond the main ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the government is organizing a comprehensive public celebration at the National Monument (Monas) area. This event will feature a variety of activities, including traditional games, entertainment stages, drone shows, video mapping, wayang performances, fireworks, and free food, ensuring a festive atmosphere for all.

The President has directed that invitations to the Commemoration or the Proclamation Moment Ceremony be extended to all national figures, including former presidents and vice presidents, requesting the honor of their presence at the Proclamation Moment Ceremony.
