Indonesia's KPK names Langkat Regent Syah Afandin suspect in bribery case

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of Indonesia has officially declared Syah Afandin, the Regent of Langkat, as a suspect following his arrest in a sting operation related to bribery for projects. Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu'arif, a private individual and part of Afandin's campaign team in the 2024 regional elections, has also been named a suspect in the same case.

Achmad Taufik Husein, the acting Director of Investigation at the KPK, announced that the case was elevated to the investigation stage due to sufficient preliminary evidence of alleged corruption involving project bribery within the Langkat regional government. Afandin is accused of demanding commission fees between 10% and 17% from contractors for projects primarily in the Education and Public Housing and Settlement agencies.

In addition to project-related bribery, the KPK uncovered allegations of Afandin receiving approximately Rp3.5 billion (around $215,000 USD) related to the reassignment of positions within the Education Agency, the appointment of elementary and junior high school principals, and the procurement of school uniforms. These alleged offenses fall under articles related to combating corruption in Indonesia's law.

Both Afandin and Mu'arif have been detained for the first 20 days of their investigation, from July 3 to July 22, 2026. Afandin will be held at the KPK's detention center in Jakarta, while Mu'arif will be detained at the Medan City Police detention center. The KPK's actions highlight ongoing efforts to combat corruption within regional governments in Indonesia.
