Indonesia's Pertamina Achieves World First Green Terminal Certification for LPG Facility

PT Pertamina (Persero) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable business transformation with its Tanjung Sekong LPG Terminal receiving the 2-star Green Terminal Label Certification (GTLC) from Bureau Veritas. This makes the terminal, managed by PT Pertamina Energy Terminal (PET), a subsidiary of PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the first LPG terminal globally to earn this distinction.

Agung Wicaksono, Pertamina's Director of Business Transformation and Sustainability, stated that this achievement is a proud moment for both Pertamina and Indonesia, underscoring the company's dedication to environmentally conscious energy terminal operations. "This certification is a source of pride for Pertamina, and also for Indonesia because it is the first time an LPG terminal has received a 2-star Green Terminal Label certification. This demonstrates Pertamina's transformation in building a sustainable business for the future of the company and the environment," Agung said.

The certification holds strategic importance as the Green Terminal standard is applied to high-risk energy facilities, particularly those involved in LPG storage and handling. Unlike many other GTLC-certified facilities, which are typically general or container ports, the Tanjung Sekong terminal's achievement highlights Pertamina's capability to integrate operational reliability with sustainability principles.

Agung further explained that the Tanjung Sekong terminal not only operates reliably but also adheres to sustainable operational systems encompassing energy, environment, digitalization, safety, and a commitment to carbon emission reduction. Key developments include the integration of renewable energy through solar power and planned use of green hydrogen. Pertamina is developing a green hydrogen production facility in Ulubelu, Lampung, with a capacity of approximately 100 kilograms per day using Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology.

This green hydrogen is intended for use at the Tanjung Sekong LPG Terminal as part of Pertamina's broader hydrogen ecosystem development. The integration of green hydrogen aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy used for the terminal's electricity needs. Wicaksono added that the application of the Green Terminal standard for LPG facilities can serve as a reference for developing other oil, gas, LNG, and LPG terminals, especially within the Pertamina Group.
