Indonesia's Top Designers to Revamp 500 Ondel-Ondel for Jakarta's 500th Anniversary

Jakarta is preparing to elevate its cultural icon, the ondel-ondel, from street performers to global ambassadors of Betawi culture. Ahead of the city's 500th anniversary in 2027, a grand vision is unfolding to restore the dignity of these giant puppets.

Governor Anies Baswedan has taken a firm stance, banning ondel-ondel from being used for street begging. He emphasized that this move is not just about aesthetics but about reclaiming the profound philosophical and spiritual value of the ondel-ondel, which has been eroded by economic necessity. This decision aligns with the Regional Special Law for Jakarta, which designates Betawi culture as the primary culture of the capital.

I want Betawi to be able to compete internationally. Therefore, personally as governor, I forbid ondel-ondel from being a way to make a living by busking. Even though ondel-ondel has extraordinary philosophical value.

The provincial government recognizes that simply prohibiting street performances is insufficient. To ensure the cultural heritage thrives, a major project is underway to fuse tradition with modern artistry. For Jakarta's 500th-anniversary celebration, 500 ondel-ondel will be reimagined by leading Indonesian designers. This initiative aims to present a new face for the ondel-ondel, blending their historical significance with contemporary design sensibilities.

The envisioned parade of 500 ondel-ondel will be a spectacle of intricate textiles, vibrant colors, and masterful craftsmanship. The touch of renowned designers is expected to bridge the gap between the ondel-ondel's historical roots and global appeal, preserving their original essence as symbols of protection and joy.
