Indonesia: Situbondo DPRD Drafts Tourism Regulation Amidst Declining Interest

Situbondo's Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) is actively developing a draft regional regulation on tourism, aiming to bolster protection and management of the sector. This legislative effort is driven by a growing concern over the diminishing appeal of several tourist spots that were once nationally recognized and highly popular.

Jainur Ridho, Chairman of Commission II of the Situbondo DPRD, emphasized that the regulation is intended to be more than just a formality. He stated that the draft aims to provide crucial legal certainty for tourism development in Situbondo, ensuring that the sector receives adequate protection. "We want to protect tourism in Situbondo; there are several attractions that were once crowded and nationally known but are now seeing reduced visitor numbers," Ridho explained during a group discussion at the DPRD building.

The initiative arises from observations that some of Situbondo's flagship destinations are losing their allure to tourists. This trend necessitates strategic policy interventions. Furthermore, the council noted that some previously opened tourist sites have fallen into disrepair and are no longer operational, potentially damaging the region's overall tourism image. "Therefore, we are pushing for the maximization of existing destinations. We also ask the regional government and all stakeholders to focus on strengthening the ongoing tourism efforts to foster better development," Ridho added.

The DPRD hopes the new tourism regulation will serve as a robust legal framework. It is expected to safeguard tourism operators, investors, and local communities involved in developing Situbondo's tourism sector sustainably. The process involves gathering input from various government agencies and community elements to ensure the regulation is comprehensive and effective.
