Indonesia tightens BPA rules for reusable water gallons, gives industry until 2031

Indonesia is tightening the amount of Bisphenol A, or BPA, that can migrate from food packaging into food and drinks, while giving industry until July 1, 2031, to meet the new requirement.

The Food and Drug Authority, known as BPOM, set the maximum migration level at 0.05 milligrams per kilogram in Regulation No. 11 of 2026 on food packaging. The threshold applies to the amount of BPA that moves from packaging into food or beverages.

The new limit is 12 times stricter than the previous ceiling of 0.6 mg/kg. BPOM said implementation will take place gradually after receiving input from industry participants, particularly the bottled drinking-water sector.
