Indonesia to Launch University Focused on STEM Education

Indonesia is set to establish the Republic of Indonesia University, which will place a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. President Prabowo Subianto announced the new institution, aiming to cultivate highly skilled human resources to meet the nation's goals for "Gold Indonesia 2045." Aris Marsudiyanto, Head of the Agency for Development Control and Special Investigation (Bappisus), highlighted that while STEM is a primary focus, the university will also offer programs in other critical fields, such as health and medicine. Aris explained that Indonesia possesses abundant natural resources but lags in technological advancement, making the strengthening of STEM education crucial for national self-sufficiency in technology. He stressed that a nation cannot thrive with vast resources but underdeveloped human capital. Beyond STEM, the university intends to bolster the health sector, recognizing its current deficiencies. The institution plans to establish ten campuses nationwide. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa indicated that funding for the university would be coordinated with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, though the specific financing scheme, including potential reliance on the state budget, is still under review. President Prabowo recently inaugurated Donny Ermawan Taufanto, the Deputy Defense Minister, as the Governor of the Republic of Indonesia University, with business professor Yos Sunitiyoso appointed as vice-governor. Taufanto stated that the university is designed to educate future government officials and leaders of state-owned enterprises, reflecting the President's concern for Indonesia's future leadership.
