Indonesia Urges Ministries to Speed Up Sumatra Post-Disaster Recovery Programs

Indonesian Interior Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has called on 16 ministries and agencies to swiftly implement post-disaster programs for Sumatra. These entities are part of the master plan for rehabilitation and reconstruction (rehab-rekon) and have already secured their allocated budgets.

Tito, who also chairs the Task Force for Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sumatra, emphasized the need for prompt action during a press conference in Jakarta. The 16 ministries and agencies include key bodies such as the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Public Works, and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

I once again hope that the heads of ministries/agencies whose budgets have been disbursed will immediately work quickly to execute the program activities.

The comprehensive rehab-rekon plan, developed by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, outlines a budget of approximately 100.1 trillion rupiah ($6.3 billion USD). The implementation is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028. The plan consolidates needs proposed by affected regions and relevant ministries.

Minister Tito also announced plans to share detailed program lists with local governments. This will enable regional authorities to align their efforts with central government initiatives. He further proposed additional funding transfers to regions (TKD) in 2026 to support parallel recovery efforts. Regions have already received 10.6 trillion rupiah in TKD, along with 268 billion rupiah in unexpected expenditures from the President, intended for disaster mitigation.
