Indonesian Agriculture Minister Offers Free Seeds, Land Processing for Productive Pesantren

Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, has launched an initiative to strengthen national food security by offering free plantation seeds and land preparation services to Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, that possess productive land. This program aims to empower these institutions to become hubs for agricultural production.

"If any pesantren needs it, we have sugarcane, cocoa, coconut, cashew, and coffee seeds, all free from the President. Land processing is also free. The seeds are free. Just prepare the land, and we will plant it," stated the Minister during the 8th Indonesian Muslim Congress in Jakarta on Sunday, July 26, 2026. He urged pesantren to play a more significant role in enhancing national food resilience.

The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is prepared to assist pesantren with land management and seed provision, encouraging those with arable land to submit proposals through local agricultural offices. Minister Sulaiman emphasized the potential for pesantren to foster self-sufficiency in food production and create productive economic activities for their students.

This initiative is integrated into a larger government plan to develop approximately 870,000 hectares of strategic plantation commodities across Indonesia. A budget of around Rp 9.95 trillion has been allocated to support the provision of superior seeds and the development of smallholder plantations. The program underscores the government's commitment to leveraging pesantren for both food security and economic development, creating new economic opportunities and fostering community self-reliance.
