Indonesian and Australian Air Force Chiefs Fly Joint Formation Over Darwin

Indonesian Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono flew alongside Australian Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell in a joint formation flight over Darwin, Australia, on Tuesday. The maneuver, conducted as part of the multinational Pitch Black 2026 air combat exercise, serves as a potent symbol of the robust defense ties between Indonesia and Australia.

Air Marshal Tonny was a passenger in an Indonesian Air Force T-50i Golden Eagle fighter jet piloted by Commander of Air Squadron 15, Lt. Col. Pnb Kurniadi Sukmo Djatmiko. Concurrently, Air Marshal Chappell piloted an Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet. Defense officials confirmed that all aerial maneuvers adhered to safety protocols and proceeded without incident.

This joint flight carries significant meaning for the relationship between the two air forces, according to Air Marshal Tonny. "Formation flight is a simple symbol that has a deep meaning for the relationship between the two air forces," he stated in a release from the Indonesian Air Force. He emphasized that the exercise underscores the commitment of both nations to regional stability and strategic interoperability throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The biennial Pitch Black exercise brings together aircraft and military personnel from 20 nations. The Indonesian Air Force is participating with four T-50i Golden Eagle fighter jets and one C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The Indonesian contingent departed from El Tari Air Base in Kupang under the command of First Marshal Somad. According to Somad, participation in such a large-scale exercise allows Indonesian fighter pilots to practice joint operational tactics, tactical maneuvers, and strategic scenarios with air defense teams from other participating countries.
