Indonesian Anti-Corruption Agency Extends Detention of Former Immigration Official

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has extended the detention of former Deputy Minister of Immigration Silmy Karim for an additional 30 days. This extension, effective from September 2 to October 1, 2026, is crucial for investigators to finalize the case file related to alleged extortion and gratification. The charges stem from activities involving foreign resident permits during Karim's tenure as Deputy Minister and Director General of Immigration.

KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that investigators require more time to gather evidence and interview relevant witnesses. This process is essential to ensure all legal aspects of the case, both formal and material, are thoroughly addressed. Prasetyo emphasized that the KPK is conducting the investigation professionally and objectively, adhering to all applicable laws, and will provide updates to the public while respecting the presumption of innocence.

Today, KPK investigators are carrying out the third detention extension for the suspect, Mr. SK, as Deputy Minister of Immigration for 2025-2026 and as Director General of Immigration for 2023-2024, for 30 days, starting from September 2 to October 1, 2026.

So far, the KPK has seized assets valued at approximately Rp150 billion, including movable and immovable properties like vehicles, land, and buildings. The agency is also investigating the use of other individuals' names in relation to these assets, with potential charges under money laundering regulations being considered.

KPK ensures that the investigation process is carried out professionally, objectively, and based on applicable legal provisions.

Eight individuals have been named as suspects in this corruption case. Besides Silmy Karim, they include Saffar Muhammad Godam (acting Director General of Immigration), Jaya Saputra (Director of Stay Permits), Bagus Bramantyo and Tessar Bayu Setyaji (both from the Directorate of Stay Permits), Ronald Arman Abdullah (Head of Central Jakarta Immigration Office and West Jakarta Immigration Office), Juniadi Sri Priambudi (Head of Limited Stay Permit Conversion Team), and Gusti Bernardiansyah (Staff member in the Stay Permit Directorate). These suspects are detained at the KPK detention center and are charged under articles related to the eradication of corruption and the new Indonesian Criminal Code.

The case initially came to light through a sting operation conducted by the KPK between June 2 and 3, 2026, during which 18 individuals were apprehended.
