Indonesian Defense Minister Meets U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense to Discuss Joint Special Forces Training

Indonesia and the United States are set to deepen their defense ties, with a focus on enhancing the capabilities of Indonesia's military through joint training and personnel development. The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge A. Colby in Jakarta.

During the talks, Minister Sjamsoeddin expressed appreciation for Colby's visit, emphasizing the importance of defense cooperation that yields tangible benefits for Indonesia's defense capacity. The two officials exchanged views on bilateral relations and the ongoing implementation of programs under the Major Defense Cooperation Partnership framework. The U.S. views Indonesia as a key strategic partner in the region, with relations built on mutual respect for Indonesia's traditions and history.

A significant aspect of future cooperation will involve improving the quality of defense human resources through education and training. Minister Sjamsoeddin highlighted that opportunities for Indonesian military personnel to train in the U.S. will be actively promoted, prioritizing professionalism and merit. Furthermore, the discussions included plans to increase joint exercises, specifically targeting special forces training. Both nations aim to bolster the capabilities and professionalism of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).
