Indonesian Doctor Accused of Defaming Ex-President Widodo Over Diploma Claims

Prosecutors detailed the origins of a defamation case against Dr. Tifauzia Tyassuma, commonly known as Dr. Tifa, during her trial on July 2, 2026. The case stems from social media posts that allegedly tarnished the honor of former President Joko Widodo. According to the indictment, the matter began when Jokowi was shown three social media posts on March 26, 2025, one of which originated from Dr. Tifa's account. These posts questioned the authenticity of his university diploma. Jokowi's legal team subsequently gathered posts deemed damaging to his reputation and held a press conference on April 14, 2025, to refute the allegations and confirm the validity of his diploma from Gadjah Mada University. Despite these efforts, the accusations persisted. Between April 22 and May 21, 2025, Jokowi was shown an additional 28 social media posts containing similar claims. Prosecutors highlighted Dr. Tifa's continued assertions about the diploma's alleged falsity through various platforms, including social media, discussions, and talk shows. The indictment specifically mentioned her questioning of the diploma's cover design, graduation photo, alumni book, supervisory lecturers, and issuance process. To counter these claims, the prosecution presented Jokowi's academic history from UGM's Faculty of Forestry, noting he completed 160 credit hours and received his degree in 1985. A forensic analysis by the National Police Criminalistics Laboratory reportedly found Jokowi's diploma to be identical to 14 comparison diplomas, suggesting they originated from the same printing source. Prosecutors concluded that Dr. Tifa failed to substantiate her accusations, which they stated caused Jokowi material damage through the defamation of his personal honor.
