Indonesian Domestic Tourism Surges, Outbound Travel Declines

Indonesia's tourism sector experienced a robust performance in the first half of 2026, marked by significant growth across key metrics including foreign and domestic tourist arrivals, investment realization, and hotel occupancy rates. Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana highlighted that Indonesia secured the second-highest growth in foreign tourist arrivals within the Southeast Asian region during this period.

The surge in international visitors was complemented by a substantial increase in domestic travel, with 630.41 million trips recorded, a 2.71 percent rise compared to the first half of 2025. Concurrently, Indonesian citizens' outbound travel saw a slight decrease of 2.40 percent, totaling 4.46 million trips, resulting in a surplus of 2.99 million in tourist visits.

Indonesia is the country with the second-highest growth in foreign tourist arrivals in the Southeast Asian region.

Minister Wardhana attributed these achievements to the government's adaptive strategies. These included a strategic 'market pivot' or adjustment, intensified promotional efforts in high-potential countries, fostering domestic tourism mobility, and continuously improving the quality of tourism products and destinations. She emphasized that these results were not accidental but the outcome of deliberate and adaptive government initiatives.

It contributes significantly to job creation, expands business opportunities, and stimulates development across various regions of Indonesia.
