Indonesian Film Festival 2026 Upgrades Judging Rules, Names Morgan Oey as Ambassador

The Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) 2026 has officially kicked off its Piala Citra awards ceremony, celebrating Indonesian cinema under the theme “Askala Karya Sinema Indonesia,” which translates to “Light of Indonesian Cinema.” The theme, derived from Sanskrit, signifies the origin of cinema and its role in recording societal experiences, celebrating cultural diversity, and passing on human values.

This year's festival introduces significant upgrades to its judging system, aiming to enhance inclusivity and protection for filmmakers. The FFI now accepts films produced by Indonesian individuals or entities, including co-productions with foreign companies as long as the majority of creative elements are handled by Indonesian citizens. Importantly, films no longer need to have premiered in commercial cinemas; screenings on digital platforms (OTT) or alternative film festivals are now eligible, provided they were shown between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026.

A key new requirement is the submission of a copyright registration certificate from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. This measure aims to educate filmmakers, especially independent ones producing short or documentary films, about protecting their intellectual property rights through a streamlined digital process. The festival also modifies its award categories, renaming "Best Theme Song Composer" to "Best Original Theme Song Composer" to specifically honor those who create original scores for films.

Furthermore, the selection process for feature films has been condensed from four to three stages. This streamlined approach includes an initial longlist and shortlist selection, followed by a nomination phase determined by voting from the Citra Academy and professional associations. This revised system seeks to ensure that the most impactful films are recognized, solidifying FFI's position as a barometer of national film quality.
