Indonesian House of Representatives will not prioritize Election Law revision this session

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has announced that the much-discussed revision of the Election Law will not be included in the prioritized agenda for the current legislative session, which runs from May 12 to July 21, 2026. This decision, confirmed by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani, means that four other significant bills, including one concerning the development and strengthening of the financial sector, will take precedence.

The DPR RI, together with the government, will continue discussions at level one on several draft laws.

While the Election Law revision is not on the immediate legislative fast track, Puan Maharani assured that discussions among factions are continuing both formally and informally. She emphasized that the DPR, in collaboration with the government, is committed to ensuring the best possible outcome for the people, prioritizing a fair and just election process for 2029. The current Election Law (Law No. 7 of 2017) is the subject of proposed amendments, with the timeline for election stages under existing law suggesting that preparations should already be underway.

This is indeed approaching the time, it's true. But what is best for the people is what we prioritize. So we will continue to have the best possible discussions, informal and formal.

The delay in prioritizing the Election Law revision has raised concerns, particularly as the timeline for election preparations, including the formation of a general election organizer selection committee, approaches. Members of the DPR, like Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tandjung, have previously highlighted the importance of timely discussions given the proximity of the next general election. The ongoing deliberations aim to incorporate all public input and ensure that the revised law reflects the needs and aspirations of the Indonesian populace, even if the legislative process takes longer than initially anticipated.

The commitment from the Government is to deliver the document this year, but the discussion and voting will be the responsibility of the Congress. Even if we send it in this period or in the Permanent (session); anyway, the real discussion in Congress will be in the next period.
