Indonesian Immigration Officials, Including Deputy Minister, Detained in Corruption Probe

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained eight high-ranking immigration officials, including Deputy Minister of Immigration and Correctional Facilities Silmy Karim, in connection with alleged corruption. The officials are suspected of engaging in illicit activities concerning the processing of permits for foreigners seeking to reside in Indonesia. The detained individuals include former acting Director General of Immigration Saffar Muhammad Godam, and several heads of regional immigration offices and directors within the Directorate General of Immigration. While the KPK has not yet issued a formal statement detailing the specifics of the corruption charges, the arrests stem from a sting operation (OTT) that apprehended 17 individuals. Silmy Karim reportedly surrendered to the KPK headquarters. The alleged illegal practices involve the processing of temporary and permanent stay permits (KITAS and KITAP). During the operation, the KPK confiscated hundreds of grams of gold, various foreign currencies, and froze several bank accounts. Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed the seizure of assets, including seven cars, 15 motorcycles, and 11 bicycles, in addition to the gold. The total value of the confiscated assets is still being calculated.
