Indonesian Islamic Scholars Debate AI, Bitcoin, and Labor Laws at NU Congress

A significant forum for intellectual debate, the Bahtsul Masail, is underway as part of the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress in Jombang, East Java. This traditional gathering of Islamic scholars aims to provide legal certainty on pressing religious, social, and societal issues, this year addressing a spectrum of contemporary challenges.

The agenda is diverse, featuring discussions on the commercialization of genetic data (DNA), the ethical and legal implications of using Neuralink chips in the human brain, and the legal standing of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Alongside these technological and financial topics, the forum is also examining draft legislation, including the proposed labor law and the national education law.

Organized into three commissions, Waqi'iyyah, Maudhu'iyyah, and Qanuniyyah, the discussions delve into specific areas. Masail Qanuniyyah focuses on regulatory matters and contemporary legislation like the Asset Forfeiture Bill. Masail Waqi'iyyah addresses current issues within a religious context, while Masail Maudhu'iyyah explores thematic subjects relevant to organizational principles and religious methodology.

Mohammad Nuh, Secretary of the Steering Committee for the Congress, highlighted that the Bahtsul Masail showcases the intellectual discourse among NU's senior and younger scholars. He emphasized that the debates incorporate not only religious perspectives but also insights from modern sciences, reflecting NU's commitment to formulating relevant religious views amidst evolving times. The forum aims to bridge traditional Islamic scholarship with the complexities of modern technological advancements and public policy.
