Indonesian national team coach John Herdman drew significant attention at the Merdeka Run 2026 held in Jakarta on Saturday. The English coach, 51, not only participated in the 8-kilometer race but also became a focal point for attendees after its completion.

Many participants approached Herdman for photos and autographs, with the coach expressing his pleasure at being part of an event he believes holds great meaning for Indonesia. He described the Merdeka Run as more than just a sporting event, seeing it as a symbol of unity and the public's commitment to health.

Herdman revealed that running is a regular part of his life, as he commutes to the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) stadium by running daily. He praised the event's organizer, Erick Thohir, for creating an occasion that brings people together and fosters community spirit. "I am lucky to be able to run with thousands of people every morning. I think that is something very special and unique to Indonesia," he added.

Reflecting on his experience, Herdman enjoyed the opportunity to run alongside other participants and soak in the atmosphere of Jakarta during Indonesia's independence celebrations. He called the experience "very special." While he participated primarily for enjoyment at 51 years old, Herdman admitted his competitive coaching instincts remain. He even suggested the possibility of running with his national team players in the future, playfully wondering who could finish first.
