Indonesian Judicial Commission Receives 1,402 Public Reports

Indonesia's Judicial Commission (KY) reported receiving 1,402 public complaints between January and June 2026, a notable increase from the 1,271 received during the same period last year. KY Deputy Chairman Desmihardi detailed that 740 of these complaints specifically address alleged violations of judges' code of ethics and conduct, while 662 were external confirmation reports forwarded to the commission.

Desmihardi stated that the high volume of reports reflects both public engagement and persistent concerns regarding ethical breaches within the judiciary. "The high number of public reports to the Judicial Commission regarding violations of the code of ethics and conduct for judges shows public attention and hope, while also indicating that alleged violations are still occurring frequently in society," he said during a press conference on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Jakarta.

Abhan, Head of the KY's Judicial Supervision and Investigation, provided a breakdown of the reports by case type. Civil cases led with 439 reports, followed by criminal cases (158), state administrative cases (29), religious cases (25), industrial relations (20), commercial cases (17), corruption (8), military cases (5), tax cases (2), and 37 other types.

The majority of complaints originated from major Indonesian cities, with DKI Jakarta reporting the highest number (145), followed by West Java (91), North Sumatra (73), East Java (62), and Riau (39). The reports predominantly targeted the general court system, with 529 complaints, followed by religious courts (64) and the Supreme Court (63).

KY verifies incoming reports through initial review and analysis before presenting them to a consultation forum. Of the reports reviewed, 121 were approved for further action, registered, and investigated. The process involves face-to-face or online examinations of involved parties and evidence collection before formal examination of the accused judge.
