Indonesian Minister Urges Revitalization of Historic Fort to Boost Local Economy

Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives Ferry Juliantoro is championing the revitalization of Benteng Van Der Wijck, a historic Dutch colonial fort located in Gombong, Kebumen, Central Java. He envisions the fort becoming a hub for cultural, tourism, and educational activities, believing its development will unlock significant economic potential for the local population.

During the opening of the Kebumen Travel Mart and Gombong Culture Festival held at the fort, Juliantoro expressed his admiration for the structure's enduring strength and historical value. "I just realized how extraordinary Benteng Van Der Wijck is. From the perspective of its building structure, this fort is still very sturdy. We just need to revitalize all its values and functions a little," he stated. He plans to invite Minister of Culture Fadli Zon to witness the fort's potential firsthand.

Juliantoro highlighted that increased tourism to the area would stimulate micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). "If all of this is implemented, the multiplier effect will impact economic progress, as MSMEs will thrive with the arrival of tourists from home and abroad," he said. This sentiment was echoed by the Commander of Kodam IV/Diponegoro, Major General TNI Akhiruddin Darodjat, who pledged support for collaborative efforts to enhance the fort's utility while respecting its historical integrity.

Darodjat described the octagonal fort as a source of pride for Kebumen residents and affirmed an open stance for collaboration. "Therefore, we open wide space for collaboration to further enhance the role and benefits of the fort for the welfare of the people, especially the younger generation," he stated. The Regent of Kebumen, Lilis Suryani, also confirmed the local government's readiness to support initiatives aimed at developing tourism, culture, economy, and education in the region.
