Indonesian parliament approves grant of Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi

Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) has officially approved the acceptance of a grant for the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi from the Italian government. The plenary session on Tuesday saw legislators unanimously agree to the acquisition, a move seen as strategically significant for the nation's sovereignty.

The approval followed deliberations by Commission I, the parliamentary body responsible for defense affairs. During a working meeting on Monday, Commission I heard explanations from the government and considered the substantial viewpoints of all factions. The commission ultimately recommended approving the grant, which is valued at approximately 54,022,426.67 Euros.

Budisatrio Djiwandono, Deputy Chairman of Commission I, stated that accepting foreign grants is a crucial step that directly impacts national sovereignty. He emphasized that the process adhered to principles of accountable, transparent, and lawful governance. The commission's unanimous decision reflects a consensus on the strategic importance of acquiring the vessel, marking what is described as Indonesia's first aircraft carrier grant.

The Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551) is an aircraft carrier belonging to the Italian Navy. Its transfer to Indonesia signifies a deepening of defense ties and a potential enhancement of Indonesia's naval capabilities.
