Indonesia Nears Completion of Port for Giuseppe Garibaldi Aircraft Carrier

Indonesia is nearing completion of crucial port infrastructure for its newly acquired Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier, with development at Ratai Bay in Lampung reaching 76 percent. The strategic naval project is on a tight schedule, as the Italian-made vessel is expected to arrive in Indonesian waters on September 20, 2026.

Air Marshal Hendrikus Haris Haryanto, Director General of Defense Forces at the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, confirmed the progress during a joint working meeting with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives. "We are actively preparing the port facilities in Ratai Bay, Lampung, where construction has now advanced to 76 percent," he stated.

The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is accelerating infrastructure deployment to ensure all support systems are fully operational before the aircraft carrier's docking. The naval base will feature specialized facilities to support the massive ship's operations. According to First Admiral I Gede Putu Wijamardi, Head of the Indonesian Navy’s Information Service, upgrades include dredging and deepening shipping channels, constructing heavy-duty mooring facilities, and increasing local electricity supply capacity.

The Giuseppe Garibaldi acquisition represents a significant enhancement of Indonesia's blue-water navy capabilities. The 180.2-meter-long carrier, equipped with advanced radar jammers and a robust weapons system including Sea Sparrow missiles and Oto Melara 40L70 DARDO close-in weapon systems, will join the Navy's two other Italian-built warships, the KRI Brawijaya 320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi 321.
