Indonesian Seamen Fall from Busan Motel; One Dead, One Injured During Escape Attempt

A tragic incident occurred in Busan, South Korea, where two Indonesian migrant workers fell from the eighth floor of a motel while attempting to escape their accommodation. The event, which took place around 3:28 AM on July 21, resulted in the death of one worker and serious injuries to the other.

The two individuals, identified as 'A' (20s) and 'B' (30s), had arrived in South Korea the day before the incident. They were scheduled to board a Chinese vessel for work, having secured employment through a domestic intermediary agency. While staying at a motel arranged by the agency in Gamjeon-dong, Sasang-gu, they reportedly attempted to escape the room.

According to reports, 'A' and 'B' tore bedsheets to fashion a makeshift rope and tried to descend from the eighth-floor window. Both workers fell to the ground. 'A' was pronounced dead at the scene, while 'B' was rushed to a hospital and is currently undergoing treatment for severe injuries.

At the time of the incident, eight foreign workers, including 'A' and 'B', were staying in the room, which was locked from the outside. It is understood that such external locking measures are sometimes implemented by agencies to prevent migrant workers from leaving their accommodations before their scheduled departure, often to circumvent issues related to illegal stay. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the fall, including interviews with the other workers present in the room. A police official stated, "We are conducting a multifaceted investigation into whether there were any issues during the contracting process related to the room's access control."
