Indonesian VP: Master AI and Science, Don't Abandon Morality

Taj Yasin Maimoen, the Vice Governor of Central Java, Indonesia, is encouraging the younger generation to embrace science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while grounding themselves in Islamic values. He stressed the growing importance of these skills amid rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).

Maimoen stated that technological progress is inevitable and requires a response through human resource development. He believes young people should not merely be consumers of technology but should understand and utilize it to meet societal needs. He urged scholarship recipients to master modern knowledge and skills without abandoning the foundational principles of religious education.

The vice governor sees a powerful combination in merging STEM with Islamic education, fostering individuals with distinct characters. Technological proficiency equips them to navigate changing times, while religious values provide an ethical compass for technology's application. He advocates for guiding technological development to benefit education and society, rather than avoiding it.

Maimoen highlighted the increasing presence of AI in various aspects of life, including education, where it can assist with information retrieval, data processing, translation, and content creation. However, he cautioned against allowing AI to replace critical thinking processes. AI should serve as a learning aid, not a shortcut that bypasses genuine understanding.

He concluded by emphasizing the need for adequate literacy when using AI. Users must be able to verify AI-generated information, understand its limitations, and ensure its reliability and accountability.
