Indonesian VP urges Saudi-Houthi ceasefire, proposes dialogue initiative

Indonesian Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group in Yemen, warning of its potential to disrupt regional security and global trade. Amin urged leaders from both sides to lay down their arms and engage in constructive dialogue, highlighting the sanctity of life and honor within the Muslim community.

"Kiai Ma'ruf Amin is very sad to see this latest situation. He is appealing to the conscience of the leaders in Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group in Yemen to immediately stop taking up arms. As fellow Muslims, blood and honor are sacred," said Masduki Baidlowi, Amin's spokesperson. The Vice President proposed a "Four Pillar Dialogue Bridge" initiative, advocating for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the reactivation of internal Islamic dialogue forums, inclusive political reconciliation, and guaranteed security for international logistics routes.

Amin emphasized that the conflict's impact extends beyond the immediate parties, affecting the global economy, particularly developing nations like Indonesia, through potential inflation and supply chain disruptions. He called for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and world religious leaders to act as neutral mediators, promoting a resolution based on Islamic brotherhood rather than foreign interests. The Vice President also stressed the need for a conflict-free zone in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, crucial for international trade and global economic stability. Indonesia, as a nation with the world's largest Muslim population, stands ready to support peace efforts.
