Infant mortality in KR: 666 children died in five months of 2026

Kyrgyzstan recorded 666 infant deaths in the first five months of 2026, according to a report from the National Statistical Committee. This represents a slight decrease compared to the 675 infant deaths registered during the same period in 2025.

The leading causes of infant mortality during this period were conditions arising in the perinatal period, accounting for 448 deaths, or 67 percent of the total. Congenital anomalies were the second leading cause, responsible for 113 infant deaths (17 percent), followed by respiratory diseases, which caused 63 deaths (9 percent).

In response to these figures, the Ministry of Health has announced a reform of the perinatal service system, with a target completion date of 2030. Key priorities of this reform include improving the monitoring system for pregnant women and patient routing, revising antenatal care standards to focus on quality, introducing modern prenatal screening technologies, establishing a genetic laboratory, and developing family planning services.
