Infant mortality in Kyrgyzstan: 666 children die in first 5 months of 2026

Kyrgyzstan recorded 666 infant deaths between January and May 2026, according to data from the National Statistical Committee. This figure indicates a marginal decrease compared to the 675 infant fatalities registered during the corresponding period in 2025.

The primary causes of infant mortality during this period were conditions originating in the perinatal period, accounting for 67% of all deaths (448 children). Congenital malformations were the second leading cause, responsible for 17% of deaths (113 infants), followed by respiratory diseases, which caused 9% of infant fatalities (63 children).

In response to these statistics, the Ministry of Health has announced a comprehensive reform of the perinatal care system, scheduled to extend through 2030. Key priorities of this reform include enhancing the monitoring system for pregnant women and ensuring timely referral to appropriate medical facilities.

Additionally, the reform aims to revise antenatal care standards to improve the quality of medical services provided. It will also focus on introducing modern prenatal screening technologies and establishing a genetic laboratory. Expanding family planning programs is another crucial component of the initiative to address infant mortality rates.
