Infantino Denies Affair Allegations Tied to UEFA Payout

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has vehemently denied reports alleging that a substantial "departure payment" made to a woman during his tenure as general secretary at UEFA was linked to inappropriate conduct or an affair. The British newspaper The Telegraph first published the allegations, which FIFA has categorically refuted.

UEFA confirmed that a departure payment was made to the individual, along with fees for an MBA course. The organization stated the payout was consistent with regulations for departing staff at the time, noting that these regulations have been strengthened since 2016. A FIFA spokesperson called any insinuation of misconduct "defamatory" and part of a "concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine FIFA and its President."

The allegations surfaced amid intense pressure on FIFA, following leaked plans for commercializing the World Cup. UEFA members, including powerful soccer nations, had previously expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino's leadership and threatened boycotts. The Telegraph's report, citing anonymous sources, claimed Infantino had a relationship with a junior employee at UEFA between 2009 and 2016. This employee was reportedly promoted to a more lucrative role and received a significant payment upon her departure from the organization.

FIFA's statement suggested that those without the support of member associations are resorting to "allegation, insinuation or misinformation." The organization maintains that its statutes, democratic procedures, and governance framework are being targeted by a coordinated campaign.
