Insecurity 'generally controlled' in Caazapá, says congressman

A Paraguayan congressman has asserted that the security situation in the Caazapá department is "generally controlled," even as he acknowledged a recent uptick in criminal acts. Avelino Dávalos, a representative for the department, stated that while there has been a slight increase in offenses over the past few days, overall security remains in hand.

Dávalos recognized that Caazapá had experienced a prolonged period with minimal significant criminal activity. However, he conceded that recent events have led to a rise in crime. He emphasized that the Joint Task Force (FTC) is monitoring the region and that authorities have long called for greater intervention from security agencies. Dávalos suggested that a lack of security presence had previously allowed organized crime to grow.

"Looking back, many months and days without news. It is a very sensitive issue, security. It is true that in Caazapá, in recent days, criminal acts have increased a little more, but generally, I think it is controlled," Dávalos declared. He also highlighted government actions against drug traffickers in the department.

Despite the recent incidents, which have surprised local authorities and residents, Dávalos dismissed any connection between the increased insecurity and poverty levels in Caazapá. He argued that poverty has been declining in the department over recent years, suggesting that the security issues cannot be directly attributed to economic hardship.
