Inter-American Commission Condemns Murder of Seven Journalists in Mexico, Urges Government Action

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent killings of seven journalists in Mexico, demanding immediate government action. The commission specifically called for thorough investigations into the murders of Josué Martínez Contreras and Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar, who were killed in the same week, as well as five other journalists in 2026.

The IACHR expressed particular alarm that the victims had reportedly denounced threats prior to their deaths. The commission noted a lack of apparent investigations into these threats and highlighted deficiencies in the protective measures taken by authorities. This situation underscores a pattern of violence that severely impacts freedom of expression.

It is especially worrying that the victims had previously reported threats, without any knowledge of investigations into the matter and, on the contrary, evidencing deficiencies in the adoption of adequate and effective measures to prevent their occurrence.

According to the Special Rapporteurship for Freedom of Expression, the assassination, kidnapping, intimidation, and threats against communicators, along with the destruction of media outlets, violate fundamental human rights and significantly curtail free speech. The IACHR emphasized that states have a duty to prevent, investigate, and punish such acts, ensuring adequate reparations for victims.

The commission urged Mexican authorities to conduct prompt, exhaustive, and impartial investigations, considering the victims' journalistic work as a potential line of inquiry. It also called for the identification, prosecution, and punishment of all those responsible, and for immediate protection measures for the victims' families. The IACHR reiterated its grave concern over the persistent violence against the press in the region and called for an urgent, comprehensive evaluation of existing protection mechanisms to ensure timely responses and prevent future violence.
