Inter American Press Association Awards Excellence in Continental Journalism for 2026

The Inter American Press Association (SIP) has revealed the recipients of its prestigious 2026 Journalism Excellence Awards, celebrating outstanding work from media professionals across the Americas and the Caribbean. This year marks the introduction of a new category, Journalism with an Equality Perspective, supported by the Inter-American Commission of Women, highlighting a growing focus on gender issues in reporting.

The official awards ceremony is scheduled to occur during the SIP's 82nd Annual Assembly in Bogotá, Colombia, from October 22 to 25, 2026. María Lorente, president of the Awards Commission and regional director for Latin America at Agence France-Presse (AFP), noted that the quality of submissions reflected the "vitality, rigor, and innovation of hemispheric journalism in the face of challenging environments."

Among the notable winners, the "In-depth Journalism" category, sponsored by the Peruvian newspaper La República, honored an investigation titled "The Price of Progress: The Dark Side of Critical Minerals in the Amazon." This award-winning piece, a collaborative effort by Juan Torres and several other journalists for Amazon Underworld of Colombia, meticulously documented the pervasive influence of organized crime in regional mining through field reporting, analysis, and visual resources.

In the "Opinion" category, sponsored by the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio, Catalina Lobo-Guerrero received the top prize for her column "¿Volver a Caracas?" published in El País-América of Colombia. Her work was commended for its insightful portrayal of Venezuelan political uncertainty and the complex dilemma of returning to the country, blending personal reflection with sharp analysis.
