Inter train with Dimarco still a doubt before Real Madrid visit

Federico Dimarco trained with Inter Milan on Monday, but the left wing-back remains a doubt ahead of the team's Champions League opener against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Dimarco, a key player who was named Serie A's best player last season, finished Inter's most recent league match against Napoli with discomfort. Cristian Chivu substituted him in the 62nd minute, and the player returned to training wearing protection on his right knee.

His presence in the session offered an encouraging sign, but Chivu still must decide whether to include him in the squad for Tuesday's match. If Dimarco travels to Madrid, Carlos Augusto is one of the leading options to start in his place, allowing Inter to avoid taking risks with the defender.

Chivu is also preparing changes to the team that came from behind to beat Napoli on Saturday, according to local media reports. Hakan Calhanoglu is expected to return in midfield, while Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram could start together in attack after Chivu gave Pio Esposito the opportunity in the league.

Benjamin Pavard and John Stones are also candidates to receive playing time in defense. Djed Spence is the only player initially expected to be unavailable as he continues his recovery from injury. Inter will face Real Madrid on Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Santiago Bernabeu in the opening round of the Champions League league phase.
