Interior Ministry Adjusts Salary of 19-Year-Old Student Earning Nearly 2 Million Pesos

The Interior Ministry is adjusting the salary of a 19-year-old student whose monthly pay has caused controversy in Chile.

Cristóbal Soto, a first-year journalism student at the University of the Andes, works as the ministry’s social media coordinator and communications aide. His salary is close to 2 million pesos a month.

Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez defended the ministry’s staff, saying employees were hired to carry out the work for which they had been recruited and did so with the highest level of professionalism. But he said the controversy had prompted a review of Soto’s specific salary.

Pavez said the pay would be adjusted according to the years that correspond to the employee’s experience. He added that the issue should not remain a source of controversy after the adjustment.
