Interior Ministry opens recruitment for 223 positions with $63,937 salary

Uruguay's Ministry of Interior, through the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR), has announced a recruitment drive for 223 penitentiary operator positions. These roles are crucial for maintaining order and security within the country's correctional facilities.

The job entails a 40-hour work week with a base salary of $63,927 Uruguayan pesos, effective January 2026. Operators will be responsible for ensuring directives from superiors and internal regulations are followed, all while upholding human rights standards within the prison system. The positions are distributed across metropolitan areas, including Montevideo, Canelones, and San José, as well as other departments nationwide, with the exception of Flores.

Successful candidates will be offered permanent employment after completing mandatory training. For trainees, the initial contract will be for up to six months. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a citizen (natural or legal with over three years of naturalization), possess a valid civic credential, and have voted in recent elections.

Exclusionary requirements include not having completed basic secondary education or its equivalent, not residing in the department or zone of application, and having a criminal record or police annotations indicating conduct incompatible with the role. The ministry will also consider additional secondary education, computer skills, and relevant training as advantageous qualifications.
