International drug ring dismantled in Spain, Germany, Austria; leader arrested

Spanish police, in a coordinated operation with Austrian and German law enforcement, have dismantled a major international drug trafficking ring. Nine arrests were made in Spain and Germany, targeting a group suspected of smuggling tons of narcotics into Europe.

The investigation, which began in April, culminated in raids across 35 locations, primarily in Germany, with additional searches in Austria and Marbella, Spain. During these searches, authorities discovered 126,000 euros in cash, five firearms, four tons of cannabis, approximately 28 kilograms of cocaine, 1.5 kilograms of crack cocaine, and 800 liters of amphetamine precursor chemicals. This quantity of precursor chemicals was enough to produce an estimated 3.2 tons of amphetamine.

The ring's alleged leader, apprehended in Marbella, was already a high-value target for Europol due to his extensive experience in drug smuggling. Authorities estimate the organization's annual turnover at 11 million euros, equivalent to nearly 1.6 billion Icelandic krona. The group's financial strategy involved using monthly profits from cannabis sales to fund cocaine shipments from Bolivia, with the leader frequently traveling to Brazil to manage connections.

To launder their illicit earnings, the ring invested in real estate, particularly commercial properties, a common method for integrating drug money into seemingly legitimate circulation. All nine arrested individuals are currently in custody, facing charges related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering.
