Ion I. Brătianu dies, considered the last direct descendant of the family that marked modern Romania's politics. He was 87.

Ion I. Brătianu, widely regarded as the last direct descendant of the influential Brătianu family that shaped modern Romanian politics, has passed away at the age of 87. His death symbolically closes a significant chapter in Romanian history.

Beyond his political involvement, Ion I. Brătianu dedicated himself to culture and the preservation of his family's historical memory. Although he had a son, Constantin Brătianu, Ion was considered the final family member to have experienced the Brătienis' golden age firsthand before the communist regime profoundly impacted the family politically and socially.

Unlike his son, who chose a private life away from the public eye, Ion I. Brătianu attempted to continue his family's political legacy after the 1989 Romanian Revolution. He founded the Liberal Union Brătianu and was elected as a deputy, becoming, for many Romanians, the last active representative of the Brătianu name in Romanian politics.

His son, Constantin Brătianu, announced the death with profound sadness, sharing a farewell message and inviting those who appreciated Ion I. Brătianu to attend his funeral ceremony. "With deep pain in my soul and profound sadness, I inform you of the passing of my father, Mr. Ion I. Brătianu. The last event he will participate in is his earthly farewell, where family, friends, and all who valued him are invited to pay their last respects and accompany him, with respect and gratitude, on his journey to eternal rest," Constantin Brătianu conveyed.

Born in Bucharest on April 19, 1939, Ion I. Brătianu experienced the dramatic changes of the 20th century from childhood, including the effects of the communist regime. He was the grandson of General Constantin I. Brătianu. After his father's early death, he was raised under the protection of his uncle, Constantin („Bebe”) Brătianu, a leader of the historic National Liberal Party. In 1974, he left Romania, living first in France and then in Canada. Despite years in exile, his concerns for Romania and his family's historical legacy remained strong. After the 1989 revolution, he returned to Romania, aiming to contribute to the restoration of the liberal tradition.
