IPB University Introduces CIBEST Poverty and Welfare Model at Islamic Boarding School

IPB University brought its CIBEST poverty and welfare model to 50 students at Pondok Pesantren Quran Kayuwalang in Cirebon. The session formed part of the university’s Dosen Pulang Kampung program on Aug. 30, 2026.

CIBEST measures two dimensions of welfare, material and spiritual. Irfan Syauqi Beik, dean of IPB’s Faculty of Economics and Management and one of the model’s developers, presented the material alongside CIBEST Director Laily Dwi Arsyianti, Secretary Rahmat Yanuar and several assistants.

Beik said the students demonstrated a strong grasp of the subject through the questions they asked. He described CIBEST as an IPB knowledge product that has been widely used, particularly in zakat-related work. He also said its focus on material and spiritual conditions fits with the comprehensive religious education provided by Islamic boarding schools.

Pesantren is a very important economic actor, so the CIBEST Model needs to be introduced more widely to pesantrens.

Laily said pesantrens play an important role in the community economy and should learn to use the model more widely. She hopes religious leaders and students can incorporate it into pesantren-based community empowerment programs.

The educational initiative has now run for three consecutive years, following earlier sessions in Lombok and Yogyakarta. Student Muhammad Gaza said the visit expanded his understanding of Islamic economics and zakat allocation.

This is the third year of CIBEST Model education in pesantrens. Previously, it was held in Lombok and Yogyakarta. We hope the university and pesantrens can continue to work together and strengthen each other.
