Iran Cancels Ukraine Strikes After Kyiv Apology; Warns on Strait of Hormuz

Iran had prepared to launch attacks on three points in Ukraine in retaliation for Kyiv's alleged strike on Iranian ships in the Caspian Sea. However, the planned military operation was halted after Ukraine offered an apology, according to Iran's military adviser to the Supreme Leader, Mohsen Rezari.

Rezari stated in an interview with Iranian national television that the Iranian military had finalized preparations for the attack. He also issued a warning regarding maritime navigation, asserting that Iran would not permit passage through the Strait of Hormuz via unrecognized routes and threatened to target ships attempting to use "illegal routes."

During the same broadcast, Rezari emphasized Iran's success in inflicting heavy losses on U.S. troops during a recent 17-day conflict, adding that Iran's missile and drone strikes had thwarted U.S. attacks in the region. This statement follows Iran's accusation that Ukraine attacked an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea on July 25, resulting in one crew member's death. Iran had demanded compensation from Kyiv for the damages.

The escalation of tensions is set against a backdrop of previous conflicts, including U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in February, which led to Tehran's retaliatory strikes on neighboring countries. A ceasefire agreed upon in April between the U.S. and Iran, followed by a peace memorandum in June mediated by Pakistan, ultimately failed to be implemented, leading to renewed hostilities.
